Time-traveling to the end of the Cretaceous Period where the Earth is in the grip of the dinosaurs, Orion and the love of his life must save the Creators—and the universe—from the satanic reptilian leader of the saurians.
Praise for the Orion Saga
"Nonstop action and mind-bending concepts combine to make Orion absolutely unforgettable. . . . Bova brings it to life on a canvas spread over time and space."
—Isaac Asimov
"Slambang SF adventure mingles with speculative theology in this gripping story of an immortal's hatred, a mortal's love, and a death-struggle that spans a million years."
—Spider Robinson on Orion
"Six-time Hugo Award winner Bova doesn't disappoint!"
—Los Angeles Daily News on Orion in the Dying Time
"Bova's adroit use of detail makes the setting ring true; his depictions of historical personages as well as his fictional creations are psychologically sound. The sounds, the scents, and the sensibility of the ancient world permeate this well-wrought adventure."
—Publishers Weekly on Orion and the Conqueror
"Bova creates characters that come alive on the page. . . . It is perfectly paced so that the reader has trouble putting the book down."
—The Clarion-Ledger on Orion in the Dying Time
"Bova presents enough solid historical backing to give the story a ring of authenticity."
—Starlog on Orion and the Conqueror
"Rip-roaring science fiction . . . tightly-constructed and fast-moving."
—Science Fiction Chronicle on Orion in the Dying Time
"One of the best SF military series around."
—VOYA on Orion Among the Stars

Perhaps I am jaded, but, while I enjoy Bova's Orion series, it strikes me as neither groundbreaking or great writing. Perhaps it is simply showing its age (the original Orion book was published in 1984, while this one dates from 2011). Nevertheless, I give it 4 stars, as the books have kept me up some nights.Product details

Orion in the Dying Time eBook Ben Bova Reviews
Orion in the Dying Time continues the tale of Orion (the Hunter), this time sent back to do battle with Set, an evil reptilian alien on whom all the legends of Satan are based. Unfortunately, in the Dying Time was not nearly as intriguing as the first two novels in the series. The alien Set is not a very interesting opponent and the seemingly unfair advantage he has over the humans in virtually every situation is somewhat ridiculous. Orion even travels back to the Cretaceous Period to do battle with Set (Set created the dinasaurs much the same way that the Creators created human beings). The ending of Orion in the Dying Time was shaping up to be very interesting with Orion using his developing powers to bring 1000 Mongol warriors back in time to do battle with Set, but they didn't even get involved in the final outcome.
Like Ben Bova's first two Orion novels (Orion and Vengeance of Orion), Orion in the Dying Time has the more-than-human, less-than-god Orion being used and abused by by the Creators, a race of very advanced god-like humans. This time, they send Orion on an errand to save mankind before it is wiped out by the maddened alien pseudo-god Set. Though Orion hates being the Creator's lackey, he realizes that if his mission fails, humanity (which includes himself as well as the Creators) will be erased from the time-line. Orion then finds himself battling the minions of Set back in the time of dinosaurs. At stake is his very existence.
This is a good sci-fi novel that deals with gods, eternity, time travel and destiny -- something Orion constantly tries to thwart, in one form or the other.
Orion hates being a slave to fate. Can't say I blame him.
Orion in the Dying Time (1990) is the third SF novel in the Orion series, following Vengeance of Orion. The initial work in this series is Orion.
In the previous volume, Orion remembered being with Anya in a starship that had exploded. Anya was dead, but he had been revived by Apollo. Orion blamed Apolla for Anya's death.
Orion awoke from the slash of a whip. He was rowing an Achaian ship carrying supplies. After rowing around a rocky headland, they saw a walled city on a bluff. The rowers called it Troy.
Poletes told Orion of the abduction of Helen by Aleksandros. Agamemmon had gathered the Achaians and besieged Troy. Since Troy collected tariffs from ships passing through the Bosporus Straits, Orion figured that Agamemmon wanted to break Troy's control over the trading route.
The Achaians had been besieging Troy for about a decade, but still had not taken the city. They laid siege to Troy only during the summer months and had cut off some of their trade, but were far from taking the city.
Orion visited Troy as an emissary of the Achaian kings. He learned that the Emperor of Hatti was sending troops to attack the Achaians. The kings decided to send Orion to scout the advance of the Hatti army.
In this novel, Orion is a man constructed by the Golden One as an agent for change. He vaguely remembers previous lives.
Aten is the Golden One, a Creator from the far future. His human avatar has golden hair.
Anya is a female Creator. Orion has fallen in love with her avatars in his past lives.
Set is an alien from elsewhere in the Solar System. He has a humanoid body and a reptilian head. He has much the same powers as Creators.
In this story, Orion finds Anya in a small temple. As they walk out, she tells him that Set is enslaving humans to tend his garden. She also says that their mission is to destroy Set. So they walk quietly out through the garden.
Anya warns Orion not to touch the trees and bushes. When he asks why, she tells him that Set would know and then pursue them. He touches nothing as they walk on.
Finally they reach the end of the garden and see an open plain that stretches for hundreds of miles. Anya tells him they are going to a primeval forest that continues south for most of the continent. They are still near the Nile on land that would eventually become Egypt.
As they cross the plain, they see a group of human slaves being herded by a small dinosaur. Anya warns him to leave the slaves to their fate, but the dinosaur starts to eat a baby. Orion charges in to kill the creature with his dagger.
The slaves are terrified. Now the masters will punish them with the endless fire. They blame Orion for causing the problem.
Orion takes them across the plain to the forest. The slaves call the seemingly endless forest Paradise. Orion and Anya lead then to a bowl within the woods and have them camp in the caves.
Another tribe finds them as they are hunting a bear. At first they are angry at the interlopers on their land killing their game. But Orion's group tell them of his adventures and the two groups settle down for the night.
Yet the chief of the tribe tells them that they will have to fight in the morning. During the night, the chief talks to Orion and agrees to a new form of combat, champion against champion with the winner getting his way. Naturally, Orion wins and the two groups merge.
Orion is busily merging tribes when Set makes his move. Set sends his humanoids and dinosaurs against the first tribe and they betray him. The lizards take Orion and Anya back to their headquarters.
Both Orion and Anya try to contact the Creators, but their telepathic powers are blocked by Set. Anya talks Set into releasing herself and returns to Aten and the other Creators. Orion is left imprisoned within a small cell.
This tale shows Orion a different Solar System than the humans of the twenty-first century recognize. Jupiter is a small star with a planet circling it. Set comes from that planet.
Unfortunately Orion learns that Set is more powerful than himself. The next installment in this sequence is Orion and the Conqueror.
Highly recommended for Bova fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of the far past, primitive mankind, and ruthless aliens. Read and enjoy!

Ben Bova great writer and a true gentleman.
Bought this to complete a series by a master of science fiction. Orion is an "everyman" sort of hero who keeps on fighting for what he believes in no matter what the odds against him
I am a science fiction fan, who most times despises fantasy. The Orion series often lay on the line separating the two genres, sometimes jumping across. The Orion Series by Ben Bova is terrific. Orion in the Dying Time is no exception. The Dying time excels in creating a nemesis that seems unsurmountable.
Orson Scott Card!!
